Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal – In his recent address, Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli outlined a comprehensive plan to drive inclusive economic growth and job creation in KwaZulu-Natal. The province’s economy is currently experiencing a low-growth trap, with average growth lagging behind population growth, leading to a regression in real Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
Premier Ntuli emphasized the need for collaborative efforts to rebuild the economy, particularly in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, unrest, and natural disasters. The provincial government aims to leverage the capacity of public entities, key economic institutions, and private-sector partnerships to stimulate growth and job creation.
The plan includes initiatives such as:
– Investing R1.4 billion in major projects at the Dube Tradeport
– Establishing an Agri-Hub at the Richards Bay Industrial Development Zone
– Supporting small, youth, and women-owned businesses through partnerships and incubation
– Fostering collaborations with the KwaZulu-Natal Growth Coalition and Economic Council, Chambers of Business, and other stakeholders
– Repurposing cultural and heritage tourism to contribute to the rural economy
– Enhancing mobility and transformation through transport initiatives
Premier Ntuli also highlighted the importance of building a capable, ethical, and developmental state, with a focus on clean governance, accountability, and consequence management.
The provincial government’s commitment to driving inclusive growth and job creation is a step towards addressing the economic challenges facing KwaZulu-Natal and improving the lives of its citizens.
