In a statement released on Thursday, Marumo Gallants FC announced that they have officially taken over Moroka Swallows FC, following approval from the Premier Soccer League (PSL). This move secures Gallants a spot in the DStv Premiership for the upcoming 2024/25 season.
The club confirmed that their home games will be played in Bloemfontein, filling the void left by Bloemfontein Celtic, which sold its status to Royal AM two years ago.
The statement read: “Marumo Gallants FC is pleased to confirm the acquisition of Moroka Swallows FC, effective immediately. Our home games for the upcoming season will be played in Bloemfontein, Free State. Further details will be announced once our staff, technical teams, and players have been addressed.”
Gallants, who finished 12th in the National First Division last season, will replace Swallows in the PSL’s top-flight. Swallows, meanwhile, finished 14th in the DStv Premiership, narrowly avoiding relegation.
The journey of Gallants began in 2021 when businessman Abram Sello purchased Tshakhuma Tsa Madzivhandila (TTM), which had acquired Bidvest Wits’ status in 2020. Financial difficulties led to the sale of TTM to Sello, who relocated the club to Polokwane.
The future of Swallows remains uncertain, with the club facing significant challenges last season, including a player strike, forfeited games, and a substantial fine. Several players and coach Steve Komphela departed, casting doubt over the club’s future.
As Gallants prepare to rise to the top-flight, Swallows’ next move in the second tier remains uncertain, leaving fans anxious about the fate of these storied clubs.
