The 2024 Derrick Spencer Schools Tournament took center stage at Eshowe High School in the Zululand District Municipality on Friday, June 14, 2024.
This year’s tournament saw the private sector getting involved after the legendary former Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns defender, Derrick Mbuso Spencer, won the “Last Legend Standing” competition worth R180,000 and donated R80,000 to the schools’ sports development program through his foundation. The region has been plagued by poverty and unemployment.
The tournament, which started in 2009, has grown significantly, and this year saw an increase in former soccer players attending the event, including Brian Baloyi, Siyabonga Sangweni, Josta Dladla, Thabo Mooki, Brilliant Khuzwayo, and Ntokozo Sikhakhane. This excited the over 500 school learners from 16 schools who came to support their soccer and netball teams.
This year’s champions walked away with both the soccer and netball first prizes, which consisted of an undisclosed amount of money, brand new soccer and netball kits, winner’s medals, and trophies, much to the satisfaction of all stakeholders involved!!!!!
The tournament continues today (June 15, 2024), where under-21 teams from the districts will battle it out for a massive prize of R100,000.
