On September 1, 2024, at the Union Buildings in Pretoria, families, friends, and colleagues gathered to pay tribute to 39 courageous men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.
These brave individuals, who lost their lives fighting crime and protecting their communities, were remembered for their selflessness, dedication, and unwavering commitment to justice.
As loved ones mourned, it was heartbreaking to see children who had lost their parents in the line of duty. Yet, even in grief, there was a sense of pride and celebration for the bravery and heroism of these fallen heroes.
National Spokesperson of the SAPS, Athelda Mathe, emphasized the importance of honouring those who have died on duty, saying, “It is our duty to honour those who died serving and protecting our country. We also want to take this opportunity to thank the families for allowing their loved ones to be part of the SAPS and to fight crime in South Africa.”
The sacrifice of these men and women will never be forgotten, and their legacy will continue to inspire others to follow in their footsteps. May their memory be a blessing to their families and a reminder of the importance of their work.
The recent fundraiser, which raised R6.6 million for the SAPS Education Trust, is a testament to the impact of their lives and the difference they made. The funds will support the education of children whose parents were among those commemorated, ensuring their dreams and aspirations are fulfilled.
As the nation mourns the loss of these brave men and women, we remember their courage and dedication to serving and protecting their communities. Their memory will live on, and their sacrifice will not be in vain.
