Minister and Durban Mayor Announce Partnership to Revitalize City

Date:

In a press briefing yesterday, the Minister of Public Works and Infrastructure, Dean Macpherson, and Durban Mayor, Cyril Xaba, announced a partnership to address pressing issues in the city.

The Minister stated that the partnership aims to unlock the potential of state-owned properties for public good, and to support the city’s efforts to revitalize its inner area. The joint technical task team will focus on abandoned buildings, revenue collection, and inner-city rejuvenation.

Specific initiatives include resolving issues surrounding the abandoned Excelsior Court building, redeveloping the former Police Barracks, and ensuring the Durban Magistrate’s Court is fire safety compliant. The task team will also devise strategies to attract investment and track interventions.

The Minister acknowledged the city’s water crisis, stating that the department will partner with the city to develop infrastructure and address the issue.

The partnership is part of the Government of National Unity’s efforts to collaborate across spheres of government. The Minister expressed optimism about the city’s future, stating that its best days are ahead.

The African Perspective will continue to monitor the progress and provide updates on the partnership’s efforts to revitalize the city of Durban.
