Durban, South Africa – On Saturday, 22 June 2024, the African Legal Professionals Association (ALPA) launched its formal-wear-themed event at the Blue Waters Hotel, featuring the esteemed Judge John Hlophe as keynote speaker. The former Western Cape High Court Judge President delivered a powerful and inspiring speech, leaving a lasting impact on the audience.
Judge Hlophe, a renowned champion of demographic transformation in the judiciary, emphasised the importance of decolonising our legal system and reclaiming African heritage. “We must recognise and respect our African values and beliefs, making the law work for us, not against us,” he stressed.
He highlighted the rich cultural diversity of Africa, saying, “Before colonisation, we had our own systems of governance and dispute resolution. We lived in harmony, respecting our diversity. We must promote our African languages and cultures, making them relevant in our legal system.”
The audience was electrified by his words, erupting in applause and song, singing “Thina Sizwe esiMnyama, sikhalela iZwe lethu” (“Africans cry for their land”), a call to unite and reclaim African heritage.
Judge Hlophe’s speech was a testament to his dedication to transforming the legal profession, inspiring a new generation of legal professionals to continue the fight for a more inclusive and representative judiciary. His legacy as a champion of transformation was celebrated by all, and his words will continue to inspire and motivate legal professionals for years to come.
