In a significant breakthrough, the Hawks have apprehended six suspects for allegedly perpetrating a massive R400 million tender fraud at Eskom and Sasol in 2017. The accused – Mark Smith, Alex Roditis, Vanessa Chungu, Raymond Crozier, Guy Le Roux, and Ronald Hoy – appeared in Palm Ridge Court and were released on R20,000 bail each.
The suspects, representing companies NJM Treatment and NDE Services, Dasmar Engineering, and Thermo Jet, allegedly falsified financial records, claimed fake shareholders’ agreements, and engaged in fronting, violating the Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (B-BBEE) Act.
According to Hawks, the suspects admitted to presenting false information to Eskom and Sasol, leading to NJM’s services being terminated. The potential loss to both entities is estimated at over R400 million.
Hawks Head Lieutenant General Godfrey Lebeya welcomed the arrests, citing the successful collaboration between the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation Unit and the Tactical Response Team.
The case has been postponed to November 29 for disclosure of docket contents.
