UNEMPLOYMENT RATE SOARS TO 33.5% AS LABOUR MARKET STRUGGLES

Date:

JOHANNESBURG – South Africa’s unemployment rate has hit a two-year high of 33.5% in the second quarter of 2024, according to the latest Quarterly Labour Force Survey released by Statistics SA earlier this week. The figure surpasses expectations, raising concerns about the country’s struggling labor market.

The data reveals a significant increase in unemployment, with 8.4 million individuals without jobs, the highest number since comparable records began in 2008. The labour force grew by 66 thousand to 25 million, while employment declined by 92 thousand to 16.7 million.

Industry experts point to various factors contributing to the rise, including economic stagnation, lack of job creation, and a skills mismatch. However, another concern is gaining attention: the preference for undocumented foreign workers by some South African employees.

“It’s a worrying trend,” said a labour rights activist. “Employers are taking advantage of desperate individuals, paying them lower wages and exploiting their vulnerability. This not only hurts South African workers but also perpetuates illegal activities.”

The issue has sparked heated debates, with some arguing that undocumented workers are willing to accept lower pay, making them more attractive to employers. Others claim that this practice undermines fair labor standards and fuels xenophobia.

The government has pledged to address the issue, emphasising the need for fair labour practices and proper documentation for all workers. However, enforcement remains a challenge.

As South Africa grapples with high unemployment, the focus shifts to creating jobs, promoting fair labour standards, and addressing the complexities surrounding undocumented workers.
