Soweto, South Africa – A devastating incident has left the Naledi community reeling after five children died and one remains critically ill following suspected food poisoning from snacks purchased at a local spaza shop.
The victims, aged between 7 and 12, reportedly consumed the snacks while playing together. Shortly after returning home, they complained of severe stomach pains, headaches, and drowsiness.
“I hope the boy in hospital recovers and can tell us what happened,” said Dumisani Masilela, father of deceased child Zinhle. “We need answers.”
Otlotleng Msimango, mother of deceased child Njabulo, echoed the sentiment. “They were together; the boy in hospital is our only hope for the truth.”
Medical professionals suspect rat poisoning, citing symptoms including vomiting a yellow-brown substance and foaming at the mouth.
The spaza shop, closed on Monday, is at the center of the investigation.
