The Last 16 Beckons: Germany Advances, Croatia Held

Date:

Germany became the first team to secure a spot in the Last 16, comfortably defeating Hungary 2-0. Meanwhile, Croatia’s hopes hang in the balance after a surprising 2-2 draw with Albania.

In Düsseldorf, tournament favourites France faced a resilient Austrian side, now under the guidance of German mentor Ralf Rangnick since 2022. Les Bleus secured maximum points thanks to an own goal from Max Wober in the 38th minute, but at a cost: star forward Kylian Mbappé suffered a broken nose, requiring surgery that may sideline him for the next match.

In Group E, perennial underachievers Belgium suffered a shocking 1-0 defeat to minnows Slovakia in Frankfurt. Other results included Romania’s 3-0 victory over Ukraine, Turkey’s 3-1 win against Georgia, Portugal’s 2-1 triumph over Czechia, and Scotland’s 1-1 draw with Switzerland.
