South Africa’s Smart Driver’s License Project: A Questionable Preference for Foreign Expertise?

Date:

In a move that has raised eyebrows and sparked concern, the South African Department of Transport has awarded the contract for the country’s new smart driver’s license cards to IDEMIA Identity and Security South Africa, a subsidiary of the French multinational IDEMIA. This decision comes at a time when South Africa is grappling with high levels of identity fraud and illegal immigration, making the security and integrity of the country’s identity documents a matter of utmost importance.

Critics argue that the government’s preference for a foreign company over local expertise is questionable, especially given the sensitive nature of the project. With identity fraud and manipulation of systems by illegal immigrants being major concerns, many are wondering why the government did not opt for a local company that could provide equal, if not better, expertise and security.

Furthermore, IDEMIA’s involvement in controversies, including a recent contract termination with Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) over allegations of misconduct, has raised red flags about the company’s suitability for this project.

The government’s decision has sparked debate about the country’s reliance on foreign firms for critical projects and the potential risks associated with outsourcing sensitive work to companies with questionable track records. As South Africa continues to navigate its challenges, many are left wondering if this is the kind of progress they had envisioned for the country.

Is the government’s preference for foreign expertise a sign of a lack of faith in local capabilities, or is it simply a case of following the lowest bidder? Whatever the reason, one thing is clear: the security and integrity of South Africa’s identity documents are too important to be left in the hands of foreign companies with questionable track records.
