The African National Congress (ANC) has been hit by a wave of resignations, with several members jumping ship in recent days. The latest to leave the party is Sbusiso Radebe, also known as Sbusiso Mathebula or “Comrade Lion”.
In a scathing resignation letter, Radebe wrote: “When I joined the liberation struggle, risking my life to free our people and country, I went by the nom de guerre ‘Sebastian Thuso’. After 45 years of service, including working with Presidents Mandela, Mbeki, and Zuma in security and intelligence roles, I am deeply pained to witness the death of our beloved organisation, the ANC.”
Radebe’s letter continued: “The ANC has lost its political character, morality, and revolutionary fervour. It has abandoned the mandate of our people and completely departed from its historic mission to liberate Africans and black people. The party was founded to wage a people’s struggle for the return of land to its rightful owners, but it has forgotten its roots.”
Radebe’s resignation follows several others, amid allegations that the ANC has sold out to the Democratic Alliance (DA). The party’s recent agreements with the DA have sparked outrage among some members, who feel that the ANC has abandoned its revolutionary principles. As the resignations continue to mount, it remains to be seen how the ANC will recover from this internal crisis.
