The much-anticipated announcement of Premier Panyaza Lesufi’s cabinet has been postponed for the second time, amidst a standoff between the African National Congress (ANC) and the Democratic Alliance (DA) over portfolio allocations.
According to sources close to the negotiations, the ANC and DA are at loggerheads over the number of MEC positions to be allocated to the DA. The ANC is reportedly offering three positions, while the DA is holding out for four.
The DA has made it clear that they expect a significant share of power in the Gauteng provincial government, and their actions suggest that they are willing to withdraw their support for Lesufi if their demands are not met. This move is seen as a stark reminder of the DA’s influence in the province and a clear message to Lesufi that they hold the keys to his political fate.
The stalemate has sent shockwaves through the markets, with the rand experiencing a significant decline against major currencies. Analysts warn that if Lesufi fails to appease the DA, the rand could experience a sharp downturn, threatening economic stability.
ANC Veterans League (ANCVL) Snuki Zikalala has urged both parties to reach a compromise, saying “it’s time for them to put the interests of the people first.”
As the standoff continues, the people of Gauteng wait with bated breath for Lesufi to announce his cabinet. The delay has sparked concerns about the impact on the province’s governance and the potential consequences for the economy.
