Nairobi, Kenya – Kenya is in the grip of widespread protests as demonstrators take to the streets, demanding lower taxes and better governance. The protests have turned violent, with videos showing administrative and government buildings being set alight.
The demonstrators are venting their frustrations against President William Ruto’s administration, accusing it of imposing excessive taxes and failing to address the country’s economic woes. Kenya’s economic struggles have been exacerbated by corruption, with the country ranking 137 out of 180 countries in Transparency International’s 2019 Corruption Perceptions Index. The proposed Finance Bill 2024 is seen as another burden on taxpayers, with many calling for its cancellation.
The situation remains volatile, with reports of clashes between protesters and security forces. The international community is watching with concern as the situation unfolds.
