A historic football fans competition is set to take place in Durban this coming weekend (December 7, 2024). Football enthusiasts from all six KZN NSL teams and three of the most supported teams in South Africa are preparing to move from the stands to the pitch in this first-of-its-kind global football tournament.
Supporter branches from the nine teams will battle it out on the football pitch for a whopping R100,000 winner’s check, while runners-up will pocket a cool R50,000. A R5,000 participation fee is guaranteed for each team.
Founder and organizer Jason Zikalala from the 12th Man Group commented, “The idea for this tournament came from thinking about how football supporters can benefit from the game they love and sacrifice so much for. The answer was the FANS Cup.”
The tournament is already endorsed by SAFA KZN, with the mother body committing to provide professional referees. Discussions with the PSL for endorsement are at an advanced stage, according to Zikalala. Each team will be provided with playing kits on the day. The tournament is scheduled to conclude in January 2025.
