In a remarkable turn of events, Gopolang Taunyana has gone from refereeing at the Engen Knockout Challenge in 2023 to becoming the Gauteng Engen Knockout Challenge Defender of the Tournament in 2025. The 17-year-old Kaizer Chiefs u18 player led his team to victory over Mamelodi Sundowns in a thrilling final on July 7 in Johannesburg.
Taunyana’s unique path to success began when he used his experience as a referee to study his future teammates and identify areas where he could improve. “For me, it’s just a game of football,” he said. “I’m always wanting to learn about the game. It’s always been my passion.”
Taunyana’s hard work and dedication paid off as he marshaled the Chiefs’ defense to concede just one goal throughout the tournament, scoring 13 in the process. “Hard work,” he emphasized. “I think being part of the tournament showed me how they play, how the players are, and what they’re looking for.”
The Engen Knockout Challenge has opened doors for Taunyana and his peers, providing a platform for young players to showcase their talent. “Engen opened so many doors,” he said. “The coaches told us this is an opportunity for you guys to open the door for yourselves. So, if you guys go there and perform, you’re gonna open doors.”
Taunyana continues to grow both on and off the field, officiating midweek veteran games and equipping himself with knowledge and experience. “I enjoy it,” he said. “I ref the likes of Stanton ‘Stiga’ Fredericks and Matthew Booth.”
As Taunyana looks to the future, his passion and dedication to the game are sure to take him far.
