In a bid to restore the city to its former glory, the eThekwini Metro police have launched an operation to remove illegal occupants and vagrants from the city’s streets. Working in conjunction with the Safer Cities Unit, the police are not only enforcing the law but also offering support to homeless individuals.
Those found occupying spaces illegally are being relocated to shelters, where they will have access to rehabilitation programs. However, individuals found in possession of illegal substances will face criminal charges.
The operation comes as the eThekwini Municipality has experienced a significant increase in street dwellers in recent years, leading to a rise in theft, robberies, and substance abuse. Residents have expressed hope that the Metro police will continue their efforts to restore the city to its former state.
While some have raised concerns about the operation, many believe it is a necessary step towards reclaiming the city’s public spaces and ensuring the safety and well-being of all citizens.
The eThekwini Metro police have reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining law and order in the municipality, and their collaboration with the Safer Cities Unit is seen as a positive step towards addressing the complex issues surrounding homelessness and substance abuse. As the operation continues, residents remain hopeful that their city will once again thrive.
