CIVIL SOCIETY MOVEMENTS RALLY BEHIND JUDGE HLOPHE FOR JSC ROLE

Date:

In a letter dated on the 5th day of July 2024, a collective of civil society movements has thrown its weight behind Judge John Hlophe’s potential appointment to the Judicial Service Commission (JSC), dismissing opposition from certain NGOs as an attack on the principle of representativity.

The letter, addressed to National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza, expresses support for Judge Hlophe’s candidacy, citing his esteemed academic background and experience as a champion of economic and social justice.

The movements – including the HnSies against Impunity Movement, Basic Rights Foundation, and Concerned Young People’s Forum of South Africa – slammed certain NGOs, including Freedom Under Law and the Helen Suzman Foundation, as “lapdogs for Zionism and White supremacy” that perpetuate the interests of White Monopoly Capital at the expense of the black majority.

“We, the true representatives of the poor, black, downtrodden, and economically marginalised masses, fully support Judge Hlophe’s appointment to the JSC,” the letter read.

The movements argued that Judge Hlophe’s appointment would represent a significant step towards economic and social emancipation for the majority of Africans, and that opposition to his candidacy was a attempt to maintain the status quo of White supremacy and economic exclusion.

The letter concluded by urging Speaker Didiza to disregard the objections of these NGOs and consider the will of the people in the appointment process.
